So, what are the basic building blocks for creating a sustainable office? Here are the latest modern office design ideas:
1. Low-Carbon Transport: Did you know that in the USA, transportation accounts for 30% of all emissions? Sitting in rush hour harms the environment, increases stress levels and impacts on productivity. Businesses can support healthier, earth-friendly commuter options like biking or walking to work by having secure bike storage and on-site shower/change rooms. Physical activity also boosts productivity, engagement, and job satisfaction, as well as actively fighting depression and anxiety. 2. Natural Lighting: Sunlight is what sets our natural rhythms, telling us when to be awake and active and when to be asleep. It has such a powerful effect on us that studies have shown that workplaces that optimize natural lighting saw an increase in productivity and wellness at work. Employees also slept better when they were home from the workday. Another benefit is that your office relies less on artificial lighting, reducing costs and emissions. Architectural glass walls are a great way to ensure that natural light penetrates into your building effectively. 3. Green Products: From using sustainable or recycled materials in your office fit-out and recycling old office furniture to ensuring that your company uses eco-friendly products as part of its daily operations is another great way to create a sustainable workplace. Even your office cleaning products can be green! 4. Pushing Paperless: Going completely paperless is a huge challenge, but even actively reducing paper use in the office makes a significant contribution to sustainability. With office workers in the USA using 10,000 pieces of paper a year, you can see that paperless policies can make a big impact no matter your industry. Another plus point: it also saves on printing and storage costs. After all, engaged employees are more satisfied with their jobs, less likely to leave the company and are more productive and effective in the workplace. While workplace relationships play a critical role in employee engagement, technology is also important to creating the right workplace culture and environment.
Technology has a significant impact on how and even where we work, whatever the industry we work in. Here are some new technologies on the horizon that could impact on how we engage in the workplace.

Flexible work hours, work locations and how people work actively leads to increased innovation, improved communication, quality creative thinking, improved engagement and increased productivity.
How Many Companies in the USA are Embracing a Flexible Work Culture? Studies like the one mentioned above have started making the move from “interesting” to “implementation”, with more than one-third of full-time employees in the USA fulfilling the majority of their work obligations from a remote location. Almost 98% of the surveyed employees reported that they had at least some form of flexible working arrangement. What are Employees Reporting About Flexible Working? 45% of flexible workers feel that a flexible work culture increases their ability to communicate with colleagues in a way that is effective and boosts innovation and creativity, while only 5% reported a decrease with the rest remaining constant. 60% felt that they were more engaged and productive, with just 4% saying they felt less engaged and productive. Technology and Training to Support Workplace Flexibility Two of the most important aspects to take note of in the study are the roles of technology and training. 76% of the study’s group said workplace technology had made flexible working much easier to accomplish, especially in terms of communicating and collaborating with their team. One weak spot, however, is that 57% of the group had received no training or guidance on how to maintain and manage their work flexibility. This made a significant impact on the results, with the policies having a far greater impact on productivity and communication on those that did receive training than those who received no training in this area. According to the American Institute of Stress, constant stress can also contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. So, what are the most important sources of stress that businesses need to deal with to help staff lead healthier, more productive lives?
The Most Common Sources of Stress in the Workplace According to research by CareerCast.com, the top 4 sources of workplace stress were: Unpredictability – A lack of workplace routine, lack of schedule or routine tasks and deliverables each month. Inconsistency in daily routines where the workflow is constantly changing makes for a stressful workday where you can never seem to get ahead or settle in. Workplace environment – This refers to workplace relationships between an employee and co-workers, clients, customers, superiors and leadership. Workplace conflicts, constant pressure to perform delivered in every conversation, incomplete information and poor interpersonal/communication skills all lead to increased stress. Deadlines – Constant, overwhelming or short/demanding deadlines are an immediate trigger for stress. Safety of others – This is significant in roles where people are responsible for the physical or mental safety of others, for example, as doctors and healthcare professionals or firefighters and police officers. As you can see, stress factors can be linked to the role or industry, but there are many common triggers for stress that any workplace can try to minimize as far as possible. Combatting stress by improving communication, encouraging a more open and supportive workplace culture and even by redesigning your workplace to be more peaceful, healthy and welcoming can all help employees fight stress effectively and optimize their productivity. Many companies feel the same way and are starting to implement remote working as a solution.
What are the Benefits of Remote Working? While the absence of a daily commute is the one benefit everyone knows about, there are several other benefits to this policy. These include:
Does Remote Working Mean the End of the Office? No – remote working should be a partnership between employees and the company, allowing staff the flexibility and support to achieve their full potential, whether they prefer the collaborative space of the office or the quiet and independence of remote working. It empowers employees to do their best work, makes them feel trusted to complete their tasks without being micromanaged, and rewarded with the freedom to achieve a better work-life balance. Even with a comprehensive remote working policy, companies still ensure that staff have regular meetings, sessions and more in the workplace – ensuring that networking and creativity flows freely. Located in the prestigious Square Mile, the building’s design and future mark a very real change in what commercial architecture means.
Awareness of its Place in London’s Flow, Society and History This project required two buildings to be removed from the site, namely Bucklersbury House and Temple Court. These buildings in many ways symbolized where commercial development used to be – from the shoddy removal of a Roman temple discovered on the building site to ignoring street patterns, breaking height restrictions and prioritizing parking space with little regard for pedestrians. In contrast, the new buildings showcase the change in commercial architecture and design to something that fits comfortably into the city skyline while still fitting in an astonishing 1.1 million feet of workspace. It offers a restaurant-lined arcade for staff and the public, walkways that include a new square lined by sculpture and foliage by artist Cristina Iglesias. The Roman temple has been carefully moved back to its location as well, housed in a dedicated public museum in the double-height basement that is also home to over 14,000 items discovered during the build. Pedestrian traffic also has easy access to public transport, thanks to the new exit for the Bank Tube station. The building is also renowned for its sustainability and energy efficiency, making use of several complex systems designed into the structure itself to maintain comfortable temperatures at minimal energy costs. It also harvests and utilizes rainfall, filtering it for building use in its own plumbing systems. The project increased its sustainability rating further by going local for much of its materials and systems, with almost 90% of the project’s cost being spent in the UK. Even the wall panels are woven with Yorkshire-sourced wool. This building, from its foundations upwards, shows a new age of commercial architecture that is built on respect for the environment, for the people who work in it, the city it is located in and even the people who walk past it.
