The debate between traditional sitting desks and standing desk has been raging for several years now, but we’re proud to say it’s been solved! The answer is a desk that allows you to do both, so employees can choose to sit, stand, or experience a combination of both throughout their day. And the best news is that providing desks with the option for employees to sit or stand can increase productivity in the workspace! Here are some of the benefits of sit or stand desks.
#1 – Healthier employees The connection between health and productivity is a clear one, and it brings a lot of benefits to employees as well as your business. Sitting for long periods of time simply isn’t good for us. There are many scientific studies that have proven that sitting increases obesity, cancer, and heart disease risks, that it hurts our backs, reduces healthy circulation and diabetes risks, and even negatively impacts our mood. As a result, by having sit or stand desks, employees can spend more time standing as it suits them, lowering the health impacts of sitting for too long. Healthy employees are more engaged and more productive – taking far fewer days off for illness too! This reduced absenteeism is a significant win, as sick days currently cost the US economy more than $2 billion each year, with smaller businesses losing $16-81 per employee per year, and bigger businesses as much as $286 per employee per year[1]. #2 – A happier office It’s straightforward logic that a workplace with employees who are healthier and suffer from less back pain is a happier one. But having a more positive atmosphere is just the start. When employees are happier and feel like the organization they work for cares about their wellbeing, job satisfaction goes up. This reduces absenteeism and organizational productivity[2], and creates a more engaged, motivated, and loyal staff base. This means less turnover, which can cost organizations one-half to two times the annual salary of the employee[3], and less lost productivity due to disengagement, which costs the economy a massive $350 billion per year[4]! #3 – A productive, flexible, and inclusive workplace Not everyone wants to or can use a standing desk – and not everyone wants to stand all day long, which can be very tiring on feet and joints. A sit or stand desk lets employees adjust their work style at any point in the day, as they like. It allows you to sit or stand intermittently with a few simple adjustments, making it a flexible and space-saving solution that empowers employees to be healthier and more comfortable at the office. Today, it’s important to make the office space as attractive as possible to your staff, helping to bring the right people into your business and giving them the tools they need to be productive. With these desking solutions, your staff’s needs are actively addressed and supported to create an inclusive environment. It’s flexible too, making it a great solution for hotdesking and hybrid work environments. Ergonomically adjustable and easy to use, they help your staff do what they do best, supporting your productivity and growth goals. Changing a few decor items around your office for the seasons is a great way to keep the decor fresh, engaging, and fun. It’s also an affordable way to update your design without an intensive overhaul. Here are some tips from our team that will brighten up your space.
#1 – Wall art While there’s nothing wrong with keeping your larger items of wall art on your walls, you can easily freshen up the space by moving them around or swapping out smaller items. You can add a seasonal touch through the art you introduce. For example, soft florals or art in light greens and yellows are perfect for spring and summer, while rich reds and browns bring in warmth for the cooler months. It’s also a good idea to bring in textures at the same time. For example, antique gold frames will reflect light and bring a warmer feel for winter, while white or rustic wooden frames give a softer, natural feel for summer. Our top tip: Wall art can be expensive, but there are some great affordable options you can use. Panels of wallpaper fixed to canvases is one great option – and commissioning pieces from local artists and art schools is another! #2 – Soft furnishings Resimercial design is all about making the office feel more welcoming, home-like, and comfortable. And soft furnishings play an important role in achieving this. When the seasons change, they also make great accent pieces you can easily and affordably swap out. For example, large velvet cushions are great in the cool months but can be changed to natural linen covers when it heats up. Similarly, you can swap out your thick, plush rugs for lightweight cotton rugs in the spring. Our top tip: Save money on soft furnishings by looking for upcycled and unwanted items on Facebook Marketplace and in local vintage stores. Thrifted items aren’t just cheap, they are great for the environment and give your space a truly unique look. #3 – Natural touches Nature is inherently restorative for us all. Adding plants in a workplace helps purify the air, reduce stress, and increase productivity – not to mention that indoor plants are one of the biggest Instagram trends of the moment! Changing your plants based on the season is a great way to instantly freshen up your space and add color. Good examples include using low light, low maintenance plants like rubber trees and ficus in winter, but changing them out for flowering orchids, peace lilies, and ferns in the spring. Our top tip: Buying new plants can be an expensive project and they do need to be looked after to look their best. One good idea is to contact a company that rents out office plants. They’ll recommend the best plants for your space, look after them, and change them out as you like. #4 – A pop of color Color plays an important role in creating the right energy for your workplace, but that doesn’t mean you need to repaint every season. This is where affordable swaps make a big difference! You can swap out deep jewel tone cushions, curtains, café umbrellas, and ornaments that are ideal for the winter with white, spring green, pale blue, yellow or pinks in the warmer seasons. These small pops of color add up to a big result, refreshing your space and catching the eye! Our top tip: If you’re going to pick one space to make a seasonal décor swap out, make it an informal space that everyone uses on a regular basis. By refreshing your cafeteria, informal meeting space, reception, or brainstorming space, everyone gets to share the benefit of a seasonal update. Rather than tell you how the process works from step A to Z, we’re gonna show you through one of our most recent, high-profile projects. The Webull Project Acquisition With business booming during the COVID pandemic, Webull, a unique and forward-thinking investment company in New York City, needed to expand their operations to another floor as their business had grown so rapidly. The CEO of Webull awarded BE Furniture the opportunity to handle all aspects of the office concept, design, construction and fit-out. The Space Located in the heart of Wall Street in NYC, WeBull was looking for a concept to fill an 18,000 square foot space that would ultimately house over 100 employees. The Vision When you’re on the cutting edge of a new methodology in financial transactions, your office needs to be as progressive, modern and energetic as your business model. In initial meetings, it became clear that the Webull team had a good understanding of what they needed from their new workplace in terms of workflow, and technology, as well as style. They are a young, exciting company, doing something outside the box and a successful build-out would need to be fresh and inviting. Sam Cheung, BE’s project manager for Webull notes, “They really had a vision of a modern office – not your traditional 90s cube farm. They’re a young company. They wanted to incorporate nature and color vs the industrial aesthetic of old Wall Street.” What Webull didn’t have, is any idea of how to get their vision to a finished product. In this regard, Webull surrendered almost total control of the design, layout and construction process to the BE team. Temporary Roadblocks As with most construction and design projects, change is inevitable. Plans often have to be modified according to space constraints, or different solutions need to be thought up to address plumbing, electrical or data issues. Which is exactly what Sam and his team of contractors had to do in this commercial space in order to solve some data and electrical roadblocks. Fortunately, this is what BE does best: solve problems. Without compromising the integrity of the design, contractors were able to utilize trenching in order to improve the wiring of workstations within the main office area. The workstations now have multiple electrical outlets in more convenient locations for the employee, and are wired up with more efficient ethernet cables to optimize data usage. “In the open area, we staged the workstations in the center of the room to maintain two aisle ways. So, every outlet had to come from a column or the floor, rather than a wall, which presents a unique set of requirements.” – Sam, BE Project Manager Office Design Transformations, Rethinking the Workspace After COVID-19 kept people away from the office, it became clear that the way people work needed to change. Not only to address health and safety concerns, but also to help reengage employees with the workplace. With more people having enjoyed the benefits of working from home, there’s now more pressure put on companies to have office spaces that people actually want to go to. As a progressive organization, Webull understands the need for the reimagined workplace and was adamant about incorporating this concept into their new design plans through all avenues. “COVID has changed how the workplace is perceived, so we are seeing new things as far as how people work, space planning, and furniture itself. And what we wanted to do [for Webull] was break away from the traditional private office design concepts.” – Sam, BE Project Manager Freedom to Push the Design Envelope It’s a breath of fresh air when trust is built early on in a client-worker relationship, which is exactly what happened between Webull and the designated BE project management team. Webull confidently put their full trust in BE to design and furnish the space after their workflow, technology and aesthetic requirements were fully articulated and received. BE Project Designer, Nicole Rivers, was eager to harness all of her prior knowledge and industry connections into this project to really go the extra mile. Nicole went through BE’s entire breath of line and when she didn’t find what she believed Webull would love, she pursued other avenues. Rivers consulted with new manufacturers, and even helped design and execute new custom pieces in-house to ensure each space within the Webull office was the perfect marriage of a nature inspired, organic concept with industrial New York. “This was a client who said, ‘You have free reign.’ Refreshing! So many companies want to stick with what they already have, or say, ‘It’s the way we’ve always done it, let’s just stick with this.’ Webull is a very open-minded company, they’re forward thinkers, so we were able to just do what we do best and think out of the box.” – Sam, BE Project Manager From Blank Slate to Feature-Filled Work Environment When BE entered the space, it was a blank canvas – just an open slab, with drywall, a basic cafe and rooms, but no furniture or distinct design features whatsoever. From the first day of construction to the first operating office day, Sam oversaw all aspects from communicating with contractors about the electrical and data reconfiguration and overall floor plan to furniture design, selection, and installation. All while Nicole led the interior design aspects of the fit-out with very personal touches. Here are just some of the features the BE team added that Webull (and their clients) can’t get enough of:
“We created a custom, solid-surface conference table in a bowtie shape. You know, most conference tables are just rectangles – you don’t think about it. We really wanted to do something new. ” – Sam, BE Project Manager Making Your Workspace an Exciting, Exceptional Place to BE Today’s forward-thinking organizations like Webull know that they have to give the best, to get the best. Their commercial space is one where you want to spend time in. Where there’s a sense of excitement when you walk through the door, and where you feel supported to give your all as a member of their team.
BE Furniture shares this vision for a work environment that is so much more than a space for typical, day-in and day-out office processes. BE Project Manager, Sam Cheung, and the rest of his team were proud to have played such a major part in demonstrating what a business environment company can really achieve when given the opportunity. “Everything was really positive with them (Webull), when we were talking one-on-one recently they told me they had some clients come in and say ‘Wow! This is a cool space, it’s very different.’ Because it’s not just a place where you come in, put your nose to the grindstone for 8 hours, 9 hours, and go home. It’s a place where you can work in a great environment with your coworkers, take breaks, experience other things and then go back to work feeling like, ‘Ah, alright, back to work!’ instead of, “Ugh great, back to work.” – Sam, BE Project Manager. When done right, they are spaces that draw people in and make them want to work for you. Progressive workspaces enhance employee wellness, and make it easier in every way for employees to get their jobs done. If you’re looking to revamp your current space, here are some tips on designing an office employees will want to work in and look forward to using each day, from the team at BE Furniture.
Create the right atmosphere Great atmosphere is one of those things that can be difficult to define – but you certainly know when a space has it! It’s essentially layers of qualities that create the right mood and the right impact on your senses. In a doctor’s office, you want the atmosphere to be hygienic, professional, confident, and welcoming. In a wedding planning space, you’ll want a sense of creativity, inspiration, and joy. And in a lawyer’s office, you’ll feel a sense of reassurance, expertise, and authority. This isn’t just for the benefits of your clients, but your staff as well. It solidifies your brand, your expectations of your employees, your values, and it helps people better engage with your objectives. The right atmosphere creates pride and purpose in your employees, showing them that they’re in the right place and setting the tone for their working day. Plan around workflow and operational activities Design is as much about creating a functional space as it is about creating an attractive one. When a design doesn’t address how your team uses the space (or would like to use the space), traffic bottlenecks, the right balance of privacy and collaboration, or current complaints about the workplace, it’s going to create frustration and stress rather than engagement and enthusiasm. With that in mind, don’t be afraid to get feedback from your staff and involve them in the design process. They need to be able to use the space every day, so they’ll be more aware of where issues lie and where it can be optimized. This also creates a sense of personal pride and buy-in to the design, making it a space where people want to work. Balance function and aesthetics The last thing you want is your office to look cookie-cutter. At the same time, you want to be able to provide operational spaces based on what functions you are hosting in your space. This is where office design specialists can help you merge functionality with original design. Some great ideas include introducing resimercial features that combine a feeling of home comforts with functionality – bringing in natural light, outdoor elements, and soft furnishings into spaces for meetings, collaboration, focused work, or flexible teams. Expect to see concepts for multi-work spaces that involve luxurious fabrics and well-thought-out color schemes, biophilic-designed café spaces for socializing and informal collaboration, high-tech functionality with hidden wiring/wireless capabilities, and ergonomic furniture that support comfort, wellness and productivity. Design an office space your employees and clients will love to be in You and your staff spend most of the day in a communal work environment, so it’s essential to make this space enjoyable and functional. As we mentioned before, if you want it to be a space that’s productive, efficient, and engaging – it may be time to gather employee feedback before coming to an office design specialist. Whatever the size of your space or your industry, the talented and experienced team at BE Furniture will design and bring to life an office that your employees will love to be in.
